Meet Your Instructor: John von Tesmar
John von Tesmar is the founder and lead instructor at KiteTheBay, established in 2009. A true water enthusiast, John has a background in sailing, wakeboarding, water-skiing, surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. When he’s not on his boat in the San Francisco Bay teaching kitesurfing, you’ll find him foiling on the ocean or racing in HydroFoil events in San Francisco or La Ventana, Baja Mexico, where he spends his winters.
Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, John grew up on Lake Erie, where he learned to sail with his father. He discovered windsurfing and then kitesurfing in 2003. John spent summers as a windsurfing instructor in Hatteras, North Carolina, and the Columbia River Gorge before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area to teach kitesurfing. Using a 21-foot jet boat named Windseeker, we provide lessons that get you in the water with a full-size kite on your very first day. The Windseeker comfortably accommodates two passengers and all necessary gear, with weather-protected seating for the ride back to shore. Our lessons feature live coaching through radio helmets and use the latest equipment from F-One.
